About Us
The East Midlands South Orthopaedic Rotation is a dynamic, high-quality training programme dedicated to developing the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons and comprises one of five rotations in the Midlands. Our rotation offers comprehensive exposure to the breadth of trauma and orthopaedic surgery while fostering clinical excellence, professionalism, and compassionate patient care.
The Leicester Orthopaedic Trainee Association (LOTA) is a trainee led organisation that creates a platform for social and educational interaction for the benefit of all the trainees within our region. Our mission is to provide our members with the resources and support they need to excel in their careers and make a positive impact on the field of orthopaedics. We believe that by working together, we can build a stronger future for orthopaedic trainees and advance the field of orthopaedics for years to come.

The rotation encompasses a diverse range of hospitals (see below) and clinical settings across Leicester and the wider East Midlands region. Trainees gain experience in both district general hospitals and tertiary centres, managing a wide spectrum of elective and trauma pathology. This variety ensures balanced exposure to subspecialties including Trauma, Arthroplasty, Soft Tissue Knee, Hands, Upper limb, Foot and Ankle, Spines, Soft Tissue Sarcoma and Paediatrics. Supervised by experienced consultants who are committed educators, trainees are supported to develop operative competence, sound clinical judgement, and safe decision-making.

Education and research is central to the rotation. We deliver a weekly consultant led structured teaching programme aligned with the ISCP and FRCS (Tr & Orth) curriculum. Throughout the year we also engage in regional research days, journal clubs, mock viva and clinical examinations, simulation and skills-based training. The highlight of our year, is the East Midlands South Orthopaedic Research Day (EMSORD) which allows all trainees to showcase their research and achievements. Trainees are encouraged to pursue academic interests and are supported in presenting work at regional, national, and international meetings.

We recognise that excellent training is underpinned by a supportive environment. The rotation places strong emphasis on mentorship, open communication, and trainee wellbeing. Educational supervisors, training programme directors, and trainee representatives work closely to ensure concerns are addressed promptly and training needs are met. We value diversity and are committed to equality of opportunity for all trainees. Our community extends beyond the workplace, with social, sporting (with the registrars currently holding the cricket trophy), and networking opportunities that help foster strong professional relationships.

We continuously strive to innovate and improve our training programme in response to trainee feedback and evolving healthcare needs. Our goal is to produce confident, competent, and compassionate orthopaedic surgeons who are well prepared for consultant practice within the NHS and beyond.
